Heart Anatomy in 3D: Chambers, Valves and How It Beats

The heart is a muscular pump about the size of a fist, sitting in the chest just left of centre. It beats about 100,000 times a day to push blood through the whole body. In the 3D Anatomy simulator you can open the heart on its own, spin it, tap each part and see the beat rate change.

Interesting facts about the heart

  • The right side of the heart sends blood to the lungs, and the left side sends it to the rest of the body.
  • Four valves act like one-way doors, so blood only flows forward.
  • The thick wall of the left ventricle does the hardest work, pushing blood all the way to your toes.
  • The heart has its own electrical system that keeps it beating without you thinking about it.
  • The heart muscle gets its own blood supply through the coronary arteries.

What you can do in 3D

Open the heart to see it on its own, turn it around, tap the atria, ventricles and main vessels to read about each one, and change the beat rate.

Heart questions

How many chambers does the heart have?

Four. The two upper chambers are the atria, which receive blood, and the two lower chambers are the ventricles, which pump it out.

Where is the heart in the body?

In the middle of the chest, tilted slightly to the left, behind the breastbone and between the lungs.

How many times does the heart beat in a day?

About 100,000 times. At rest an adult heart usually beats about 60 to 100 times a minute.

What do the heart valves do?

They work like one-way doors between the chambers and the big arteries, so blood can only move forward and never flows back.

Why is the left side of the heart thicker?

The left ventricle pumps blood to the whole body, so it needs a stronger, thicker muscle wall than the right side, which only pumps to the lungs.
