Cat Anatomy in 3D: Flexible Spine, Skeleton and Organs
Cats are flexible hunters with a spine that bends like a spring and eyes made for the night. In the 3D Animal Anatomy simulator you can spin a cat around, look inside at its organs and see the skeleton that makes those mid-air twists possible.

Cat quick facts
| Animal group | Mammal, cat family |
|---|---|
| Bones | About 230 to 250 |
| Adult teeth | 30 |
| Night vision | A mirror layer behind the retina |
| Claws | Retractable |
The cat skeleton
A cat's skeleton is light and loose. Its spine has extra flexibility, and its collarbones float free in muscle instead of locking to the shoulder, so a cat can squeeze through any gap its head fits through.
Inside the cat
In the Inside view you can tap these labels on the 3D model:
- Brain
- Controls every move, sense and thought.
- Heart
- Pumps blood around the whole body, all day and night.
- Lungs
- Take in oxygen from the air with every breath.
- Intestines
- Long tubes that soak up food into the body.
Interesting facts about cats
- A cat can twist its body in mid-air to land on its feet, using its flexible spine.
- A mirror layer behind the retina, the tapetum lucidum, makes its eyes shine in the dark and helps it see in dim light.
- Cats can turn their ears to point at a sound.
- Their claws slide out only when needed, which keeps them sharp.
- Adult cats have 30 teeth, built for meat.

Why do cats' eyes glow in the dark?
A mirror-like layer behind the retina reflects light back through the eye, which helps them see in dim light and makes their eyes shine.
How many teeth do cats have?
Adult cats have 30 teeth. Kittens have 26 baby teeth.
